Cat Training Tips

The purpose of the cat training tips are to help you properly train your pet. Cats like routines, and will quickly develop habits around the regular patterns of behavior and events that take place in your household. It is not difficult to build on these habits to train your cat to follow basic commands.

However, cats are not as willing to learn and respond to random commands as quickly as you might expect of dogs. Cats are no less intelligent than dogs, but by nature they are cautious and solitary hunters by stealth, whereas dogs are pack animals more accustomed to fast moving teamwork and cooperation in their hunting. Your expectations of cat behavior needs to be different.

After a rewarding event is repeated for a few days, such as when it is fed or let outside in the morning, a cat will quickly learn the routine and be waiting for you in anticipation. Just as a cat will associate the rustle of the cat food bag with being fed, it will learn to associate what you say and other particular sounds with good or bad events.

For example, our cat rushes to the door to greet my wife when she comes home as soon as he hears the sound of her car arriving. Equally, he quickly vanishes to some hiding place when he hears the first sound of my aggressive young nephew's voice when he visits.

Cats also like their day to follow a routine pattern. Many a cat owner has been woken by their agitated pet if they sleep in and fail to feed them or let them outside at the usual time.

One of the most important cat training tips is to use positive reinforcement to get your pet to do the things you want. There is no doubt that cats are fast learners - what you need to do is reward the behavior you want with something they like to positively reward that behavior.

Positive reinforcement for cats can be things like food treats, petting and hugs or some play time. Even just the tone of your voice can be a negative or positive reinforcement of behavior, as cats seem to be very sensitive to the mood of their owners.

If a negative reinforcement is needed for a bad behavior, the most effective measure to use for cats is a small splash of water. Certainly never resort to threatening, hitting or throwing things at your cat no matter how badly it behaves - that will destroy its trust in you very quickly.

For most cat owners, their cat training aims are limited. Usually they just want their cat to behave in a socially acceptable way in their home. Training your cat to use the litter box, use a scratch pad or pole not the furniture to exercise their claws and to come when called are often the top three training aims.

Patient animal trainers use positive reinforcement to get animals to behave in quite complex ways. The process they follow is to reward each step towards the behavior they want until over time the animal learns to tie these steps together into a more difficult behavior. Cats have been trained to use normal human toilets instead of their litter box by using these techniques.

Such training ambitions, however, can take many weeks of gentle step by step encouragement and a lot of dedication. You might be content to work on something simpler, such as training your cat to regularly fetch its toy for some play time in the evenings.
